Pet parents want the best for their dogs – especially when it comes to treats. Understanding what’s in those treats is crucial for your dog’s health and your peace of mind.

In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about dog treat ingredients and labels. We’ll also show how Michigan Biscuit Co. (MI Biscuit Co.) approaches treat-making differently, so you can feel confident about what you’re giving your furry friend.

How to Read Dog Treat Ingredient Labels

Reading a pet food and treat label can feel like deciphering code. But a little knowledge goes a long way in helping you make healthy choices. Here are some tips for decoding dog treat ingredient labels:

  1. Check the Order of Ingredients: Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. This means the first few ingredients make up the bulk of the treat. Look for treats that start with real, recognizable foods (like chicken or whole grains) rather than fillers.

If a treat’s first ingredient is a whole meat (e.g. chicken) or a named meat meal (e.g. chicken meal), that’s a good sign of high protein content. By contrast, if you see a grain or starch first (or worse, sugar), the treat is mostly carbs and additives.

  2. Understand Naming Terms – “With” vs. “Flavor”: Pet food naming rules can hint at how much of an ingredient is actually in the treat. A product that says “with bacon” only needs to contain at least 3% bacon by weight. But if it says “bacon-flavored,” it may have less than 3% actual bacon (possibly just a bit of flavoring).

In other words, “Chicken Dog Treats” should mostly be chicken, but “Dog Treats with Chicken” could have only a small percentage. Don’t be misled by a big flavor name on the front – always confirm the position of that ingredient in the list on the back.

  3. Look for Unfamiliar or Vague Ingredients: If you can’t recognize many items in the list, that’s a red flag. Chemical-sounding names (e.g. propylene glycol, BHA, Red 40) are often artificial preservatives or colorings (more on those later) that your pup doesn’t need. Also watch for vague terms like “meat,” “meat meal,” or “animal fat” without a specified source.

For example, “chicken by-product meal” indicates various chicken parts (which could include nutritious organ meat or low-quality scraps). Lack of specificity can signal lower quality or less transparency.

  4. Count the Ingredients: As a rule of thumb, shorter ingredient lists usually mean a more natural, less processed treat. It’s not a strict rule (some added vitamins or cultures can lengthen a list without being bad), but it’s a useful guide. Our analysis of popular dog treats found many have over a dozen ingredients per recipe – some even 20 or 30 different items.

For instance, one leading peanut butter flavored biscuit lists about 13 ingredients, including sugar as the second ingredient and even hydrogenated oil in the coating. In contrast, MI Biscuit Co.’s Peanut Butter & Banana biscuit has just 6 simple ingredients. Fewer, simpler ingredients make it easier to understand what you’re feeding your dog.

  5. Check the Nutritional Adequacy Statement: Dog treats are typically not meant to provide complete nutrition – and that’s okay! Look for wording like “This product is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only.” This just means the treat isn’t a complete diet.

You shouldn’t be feeding treats as meals anyway (no matter how healthy). As long as your dog’s main diet is balanced, treats can be given in moderation for fun and training. The key is knowing that a treat is a treat – even the healthiest ones are extras, not staples.

By following these steps when reading a label, you’ll quickly get a sense of whether a dog treat is high-quality or full of junk. Next, let’s go over some common ingredients you’ll find in dog treats (the good and the not-so-good).

Common Ingredients Found in Dog Treats

Dog treats come in all shapes, sizes, and formulations, but there are some ingredient categories you’ll see again and again. Here’s a breakdown of typical ingredients found in many dog treats:

  • Whole Grains and Alternative Flours: Many biscuits use grain flours as a base. Common ones include wheat flour, whole wheat flour, oat flour, rice, or barley. Whole grains (like whole wheat or oats) provide more nutrients and fiber than refined flours.

Some treats use grain-free bases like pea flour, chickpea (garbanzo) flour, or potato starch. For example, our MI Biscuit Co. Pumpkin Spice treats use oat flour, while our grain-free Apple Cinnamon biscuits use garbanzo bean flour as the base. Whether grain or grain-free, these ingredients give the treat its structure (dough) and some energy in the form of carbohydrates.

  • Proteins (Meats and Meals): High-quality treats often include real meats like chicken, beef, salmon, or turkey – either fresh/frozen or as a meal (a dried, ground form of meat). You might see named meat meals (e.g. chicken meal), which are concentrated protein powders from that animal.

Unnamed meat meals or by-product meals (e.g. “meat meal” or “poultry by-product meal”) are more mysterious; they can contain a mix of animal parts. For instance, a popular treat might list “chicken by-product meal” in its ingredients – meaning it includes organ meats and possibly things like bone or feet from chicken.

While organ meats can be nutritious, by-products vary in quality. MI Biscuit Co. opts for straightforward proteins: real chicken breast in our Chicken & Waffles biscuits and single-ingredient dried Chicken Strips (nothing but all-natural chicken breast meat). We steer clear of mystery meat meals in favor of transparent, named ingredients.

  • Fats and Oils: Fats add flavor and calories. You’ll frequently see ingredients like chicken fat, beef fat, or vegetable oils. Fats are often preserved to prevent spoilage – look for natural preservatives like mixed tocopherols (a source of vitamin E) or rosemary extract noted alongside the fat.

For example, a Milk-Bone peanut butter biscuit uses chicken fat preserved with mixed tocopherols. That’s a natural way to keep the fat fresh. Less desirable is seeing generic “animal fat” without a source, or fats preserved with synthetic chemicals (like BHA/BHT – we’ll discuss those soon).

In MI Biscuit Co. treats, fats come naturally from ingredients like peanut butter or chicken – we don’t need to add lots of rendered fats or oils thanks to the wholesome ingredients we use.

  • Sweeteners and Flavor Enhancers: Dogs, like humans, enjoy sweet and savory flavors. Many treat recipes include sweeteners or flavor additives to make them more enticing. Common examples are molasses, honey, sugar, or corn syrup for sweetness, and natural flavorings like smoke flavor or chicken flavor for savoriness.

It might surprise you, but some mainstream dog treats contain a lot of added sugar. In one peanut butter treat we researched, sugar was the second ingredient, right after flour. High sugar isn’t healthy for dogs (just like for us), so it’s something to watch for.

MI Biscuit Co. uses gentle sweeteners only when needed – for instance, a touch of blackstrap molasses in our Peanut Butter & Banana biscuits for flavor and texture – but never any high fructose corn syrup or excessive sugars. We rely on naturally tasty ingredients (real peanut butter, blueberries, apples, etc.) rather than dumping in sugar or salt.

  • Fruits and Veggies: Better dog treats often incorporate real fruits or vegetables for added nutrients and fiber. Pumpkin, blueberry, apple, sweet potato, and carrot are favorites. They not only provide vitamins, but also natural sweetness or color.

You might see dried fruits/veggies on an ingredient list (e.g. dried apples, dried peas, dried carrots in some treats). Our treats take advantage of these wholesome additions: for example, Michigan-grown blueberries star in our Blueberry & Bacon biscuits, real pumpkin puree goes into our Pumpkin Spice treats, and we use banana puree in our Peanut Butter & Banana recipe.

These ingredients are there for genuine nutritional benefit and flavor – not just as token bits at the bottom of the list.

  • Preservatives: To keep treats shelf-stable (so they don’t mold or go rancid), manufacturers add preservatives. These can be natural or artificial. Natural preservatives include mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), as well as herbal extracts like rosemary. They do the job of extending shelf life without harmful effects.

    Artificial preservatives
are common in lower-quality treats – for example, chemicals like BHA, BHT, or calcium propionate. Some classic dog biscuits used to rely on BHA/BHT to preserve fats; many brands are moving away from them now due to health concerns (we’ll explain those in the next section). You might still find treats with preservatives like sorbic acid or calcium propionate to inhibit mold.

MI Biscuit Co. doesn’t use artificial preservatives at all. Our oven-baked biscuits are dry and naturally shelf-stable, and we use natural antioxidant preservatives if needed. In fact, many of our treats contain no added preservatives – their purity and low moisture content keep them fresh. We always recommend storing treats in a cool, dry place and using them within a reasonable time after opening (just as you would with your own pantry snacks).

  • Colorings and Dyes: Some dog treats (especially multi-colored biscuits or gimmicky treats) include artificial colors like Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, etc. These added colors make the treats look more fun to humans, but dogs don’t care about the rainbow of colors.

Unfortunately, these dyes carry potential risks and absolutely no nutritional value. For instance, a certain popular “fruit and peanut butter” dog snack has four artificial dyes (Yellow 6, Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1) listed in the ingredients – purely for appearance.

MI Biscuit Co. avoids artificial colors entirely. The warm golden brown of our biscuits or the spots of blueberry you might see are all natural. We’d rather have a treat that looks a little plain but is healthy, than one that looks like candy. Remember, your dog isn’t judging the color – they judge the taste and smell!

  • Binding and Texture Agents: To achieve the right texture (especially in soft or chewy treats), manufacturers may include ingredients like gelatin, guar gum, or glycerin. Vegetable glycerin is extremely common in semi-moist treats and jerky treats – it helps retain moisture and pliability.

It’s technically edible and safe in small amounts, but it’s essentially a sugar alcohol and not nutritionally useful. You’ll see glycerin high on the list of many chewy treats (for example, it’s the third ingredient in Beneful Snackers, after corn and before sugar.

Other additives might include salt (for flavor and as a minor preservative), lecithin (an emulsifier), or minerals like calcium carbonate (sometimes added for hardness or as a calcium source). At MI Biscuit Co., we keep our ingredient lists short, so you won’t find a long list of thickeners or texturizers.

Our treats achieve great texture the old-fashioned way – through baking and the natural qualities of the ingredients. For instance, eggs and whole wheat flour provide binding for our biscuits, and we don’t need glycerin because we’re not making squishy, shelf-soft treats – we make honest, oven-baked goodies.

Now that you know what’s commonly found in dog treats, let’s talk about which ingredients you won’t find in our treats – and why we believe your dog is better off without them.

Ingredients We Choose to Avoid (and Why)

Not all ingredients used in pet treats are created equal. MI Biscuit Co. has a strict list of “no thanks” ingredients that we purposefully leave out of our recipes. These are typically cheap fillers or additives that might extend shelf life or cut costs, but don’t contribute to your dog’s well-being. Here are some we avoid, and the reasons why:

  • Artificial Preservatives (BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin): You’ll never find these in our treats. BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) and BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) are synthetic antioxidants commonly used to prevent fats from spoiling in pet foods.

Unfortunately, they’ve been linked to health issues. Studies indicate that BHA is a possible carcinogen, and these chemicals have been banned in some countries due to cancer risk and potential endocrine disruption. While regulators allow BHA/BHT in limited amounts, we don’t consider them worth the risk. (Why use BHA when natural Vitamin E does the job?)

    Ethoxyquin
is another artificial preservative (originally a pesticide) sometimes used in pet foods, especially fish-based products. It’s under scrutiny for possible health effects as well. Instead of these, we rely on natural preservation methods. Our treats are baked dry (less moisture means less spoilage) and we use natural mixed tocopherols or none at all, so you can treat your dog without any chemical aftertaste or worry.

  • Propylene Glycol: This is an ingredient you might see in chewy dog treats or “moist” kibble bits. It’s a humectant that helps retain water content (keeping treats soft). Propylene glycol is actually the non-toxic cousin of antifreeze (ethylene glycol).

It’s approved in pet foods in small amounts, but we’re not fans. It provides zero nutritional value, and while deemed safe by the FDA, it can cause issues in large amounts and is downright unnecessary in a high-quality treat. We avoid propylene glycol entirely.

If we want to make a chewy treat (perhaps in the future), we’d explore natural humectants or just accept a shorter shelf life over using this kind of additive. For dogs with sensitive tummies, avoiding chemicals like propylene glycol is one less thing to worry about.

  • Artificial Colors: As mentioned earlier, color dyes like Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1 and so on have no place in your dog’s treat jar. They are purely cosmetic and have been associated with allergic reactions and hyperactivity in some pets (and children). Dogs don’t see color the same way we do, and they certainly don’t care if their biscuit is red or brown.

We think it’s much better to skip the food dyes altogether. Some big-brand treats are still using added colors – check the label and you might see a list of artificial dyes toward the end. At MI Biscuit Co., we use zero artificial colors. The rich color of our treats comes naturally from ingredients like peanut butter, pumpkin, and blueberries. We believe treats should look like food, not plastic toys.

  • Artificial Flavors: Ever read an ingredient list and see “natural flavor” or “artificial flavor” without explanation? Those terms can mask a variety of additives. Artificial smoke flavor, bacon flavor, even artificial peanut butter or vanilla flavor are used in some treats to make them more enticing to dogs.

While these aren’t the worst offenders, they are still unnatural chemicals that don’t need to be there if you use real ingredients. We skip artificial flavors because we don’t need them – real meat, fruits, and peanut butter provide plenty of flavor on their own. If we want a smoky taste, we might use a bit of natural smoked meat or cheese rather than a lab-derived “smoke flavor.” It’s all about keeping it real and transparent.

  • By-Products and Unspecified Meats: This one is about quality and transparency. By-products (like meat by-product meal or chicken by-product meal) are common in commercial pet foods, but you won’t find them in our treats.

While by-products can include nutritious organ meats, they also can include things like cartilage, bone, and other parts you wouldn’t eat yourself. More importantly, the term “by-product” or generic “meat meal” doesn’t tell you exactly what you’re getting. It’s a mixed bag, literally.

We prefer to use identifiable, human-edible meat ingredients. If our label says chicken, it’s real chicken meat. If it says salmon, it’s real salmon. We don’t use mystery meats or combined by-product meals because we want you to know exactly what your dog is eating – just good, high-quality protein.

  • Excess Sugars and Salt: Dogs do have a sweet tooth, but they don’t need refined sugar like we do. Some treats on the market use a lot of added sugar, corn syrup, or fructose to appeal to dogs (and yes, dogs love the taste of sweet). However, too much sugar can lead to obesity, dental problems, and even contribute to diabetes over time.

We deliberately formulate our treats to be low in added sweeteners. The slight sweetness in our biscuits comes from ingredients like bananas, apples, or a drizzle of honey – not spoonfuls of refined sugar. Likewise with salt: a little salt is not harmful to dogs and is present in meats and ingredients naturally, but we don’t add salt just to “punch up” flavor.

Some mass-produced treats have salt relatively high in the ingredient list (a sign there’s a fair bit of it). We avoid unnecessarily salty recipes to protect your pup’s health. Your dog isn’t craving salt and sugar in treats – they’re craving meat, peanut butter, and cheesy flavors, which we deliver with real foods.

  • Cheap Fillers (Corn, Soy, Wheat Middlings, etc.): Fillers are ingredients that provide bulk and calories but little nutritional value. In dog treats, common fillers include corn products, cheap grain by-products (like wheat middlings or distillers grain), and soybean meal. These aren’t toxic, but they’re inexpensive substitutes for better ingredients.

For example, one bargain-brand biscuit lists ground corn, wheat middlings, and corn distillers’ dried grain all before any real animal protein – basically a lot of corn filler with minimal meat. We choose to avoid fillers like corn and soy in our recipes. Even though we do use grains in some treats, we use whole, high-quality grains (whole wheat flour, oats) rather than floor sweepings or by-product meals of grains.

Every ingredient in our treats serves a purpose – whether it’s nutrition, natural binding, or flavor – and we don’t bulk up our treats with cheap starch just to cut costs. This is also helpful for dogs with common grain allergies; none of our treats contain corn or soy, which are frequent culprits in food sensitivities.

In summary, MI Biscuit Co. takes a “nothing to hide” approach. We skip the artificial and low-quality stuff that some big brands rely on. It might make our production a little more costly or shorten the shelf life a bit, but we think it’s 100% worth it for the health and happiness of your dog. Your pup can enjoy our treats without the intake of chemicals and fillers that don’t belong in their body (or in their cookie jar!).

What “Human-Grade” Really Means

You’ve probably seen the term “human-grade” on certain premium pet foods and treats – including ours. It’s a big buzzword in the pet world, and for good reason. But what does it actually mean? Let’s clear that up:

Simply put, human-grade dog treats are treats made with ingredients edible for humans and produced in a facility that meets human food manufacturing standards from start to finish. In other words, every ingredient in a human-grade treat is something you could eat yourself, and the treat is prepared, handled, and packaged under the same regulations that govern food for people. If a product doesn’t meet every one of those criteria, it can’t legally be called “human-grade.”

Here are a few key points about human-grade pet treats:

  • Ingredients: All ingredients must be food-grade, meaning they are approved for human consumption. For example, if we use chicken in a human-grade treat, it’s USDA-inspected chicken from the human supply chain. If we use flour, it’s flour from a human food mill. Nothing can be “feed-grade” (which is a lower quality standard allowed for animal feed).
  • Processing: The treats have to be made in a facility licensed for human food production, following strict safety and sanitation protocols. The kitchen or factory is often inspected by health authorities just like a bakery or restaurant would be. Many small artisanal pet treat companies (like us) actually bake treats in commercial kitchens that could just as well be making people cookies.
  • Handling and Packaging: Even after the treats are made, being human-grade means they must be transported and stored in food-safe conditions. From the oven to the bag to the shelf, the product is kept at human food handling standards. That ensures no contamination by things that might be acceptable in feed (for example, feed-grade products might allow certain storage methods or temperatures that human food regs would not).

So when we say MI Biscuit Co. treats are human-grade, it means if you were feeling adventurous, you could literally take a bite (we’ve done it – they might be a bit bland for human palates, but they’re perfectly safe!). In fact, some customers joke that our treats smell good enough to eat, and that’s because we use real bakery ingredients.

Human-grade is about quality and trust. It assures you that we’re not using “mystery meat” from a rendering plant or subpar ingredients that failed human inspection. We hold our treats to the same standards as the food you put on your own dinner table.

Now, an important note: “Human-grade” doesn’t automatically mean “nutritionally complete for dogs” or that a dog prefers it taste-wise. It’s possible to have an unhealthy but human-grade treat (for example, a biscuit made of white flour and sugar is human edible but not great for a dog).

That’s why we pair the human-grade standard with thoughtfully chosen healthy ingredients. Also, dogs have different nutritional needs than humans – so while human-grade ensures safety and quality, we also ensure our recipes are crafted for what dogs need (e.g., plenty of animal-based protein, limited salt and sugar, etc.).
Think of human-grade as a baseline quality guarantee: it means there’s nothing in that treat that you wouldn’t eat yourself. From there, we formulate it to be excellent for your pup.

In recent years, human-grade pet foods have become the fastest-growing segment of the market, because pet parents (like you) demand better quality. We’re proud to be part of that movement. MI Biscuit Co. treats are baked with 100% human-grade ingredients. If it’s not good enough for a human, it’s not good enough for your dog – that’s our philosophy.

How MI Biscuit Co. Makes Dog Treats Differently

At this point, you’ve seen a lot about ingredients – the good, the bad, and the quirky. So how does Michigan Biscuit Co. stand out in this landscape? In a nutshell, we put transparency and quality first, even if it means doing things a little differently than big commercial brands. Here are some of the core ways MI Biscuit Co. treats earn pet owners’ trust:

  1. Simple, Wholesome Recipes: Take a quick glance at any MI Biscuit Co. ingredient list, and you’ll notice how short and recognizable it is. We believe less is more when it comes to ingredients. Each of our treat recipes typically contains only 5 to 8 ingredients, and you can pronounce every single one.

For example, our Peanut Butter & Banana Biscuits are made from Whole Wheat Flour, Peanut Butter, Bananas, Blackstrap Molasses, Eggs, and Flaxseed – that’s it! Compare that to a leading brand’s peanut butter biscuit with a paragraph of ingredients (including fillers and preservatives).

By keeping recipes simple, we minimize the chance of allergens or stomach upset, and we maximize nutrition from each ingredient. It’s also part of our transparency promise: we have nothing to hide. You could make similar treats in your own kitchen (and we encourage DIY baking for your dog!), but we’ve perfected recipes that dogs absolutely love, without needing any “secret sauce.”

  2. Real Food, Real Flavor: Our treats are crafted with real, human-grade foods – the same kind of ingredients you’d use to cook for your family. We use real meats (like chicken, salmon, bacon), real fruits and veggies (pumpkin, blueberry, apple), and healthy grains or grain-alternatives (whole wheat, oats, chickpea flour).

Because of this, our treats have a rich natural flavor that dogs go crazy for. We don’t need to spray on a bacon flavor or add digest extracts to make dogs interested – the aroma of real peanut butter or roasted chicken does the job! This is one reason we don’t add salt or sugar in high amounts; we let the core ingredients shine.

It’s also why you’ll see specific descriptors like “Michigan Blueberries” on our label – we source quality produce and we’re proud of it. Real ingredients also mean better nutrition: those blueberries provide antioxidants, that pumpkin provides fiber and vitamin A, the flaxseed offers omega-3 fatty acids, etc. Your dog isn’t just getting an empty-calorie treat; they’re getting little bites of whole foods that contribute to their health.

  3. No Nasties (Ever): All the ingredients we don’t use (from the previous section) set us apart as well. No cheap fillers, no by-product meals, no chemical preservatives or dyes. This commitment is a core value for MI Biscuit Co. We formulate our treats as if we were going to feed them to our own children – with nothing questionable.

This means that even if you compare us to other “natural” or premium brands, you’ll often find we’re a step above in purity. For instance, some natural treat brands still use ingredients like cane sugar or “natural flavor.” Check our labels – you won’t find those extras.

We even avoid common allergens where possible (none of our recipes contain soy or corn, two frequent problem ingredients for allergic pets). By making treats with such clean ingredient profiles, we ensure that even dogs with sensitive stomachs or picky eaters can enjoy them. And pet parents can have full peace of mind. There’s a reason our slogan is along the lines of “Healthy, Honest, Tasty” – we hold ourselves to those words.

  4. Small-Batch, Artisanal Production: MI Biscuit Co. isn’t a giant conglomerate cranking out millions of biscuits in an automated plant. We’re a passionate small company that treats treat-making as a craft. Our biscuits are oven-baked in small batches, which gives them a home-style quality you can see and smell.

Baking instead of extruding (the process used for many kibble-like biscuits) means our treats are slowly cooked to perfection, preserving flavor and nutrition. We also hand-inspect and quality-test our products rigorously. Every batch meets our standards or it doesn’t go out.

This hands-on approach is how we can afford to use real cooked bacon in a biscuit or roll oats into a recipe without it gumming up industrial machinery. It might not be the cheapest or fastest way, but it’s the better way for a superior treat. When you open a bag of our treats, we want you to get a whiff and think, “Wow, this actually smells like real food – I see actual pieces of blueberry/oat/etc.” That’s the small-batch difference.

  5. Transparency and Trust: We know that trust has to be earned. That’s why we created this very comparison and guide – to educate you on dog treat ingredients and show exactly how ours stack up. We openly share our full ingredient lists and even compare them to other brands because we truly have nothing to hide.

Our mission is to make the healthiest, tastiest treats and to help pet owners make informed decisions. We don’t engage in negative attacks on other brands, but we will gladly point out facts (like when a competitor uses artificial additives) because you deserve to know what you’re buying.

Additionally, being a local Michigan company, we are very accessible. Have a question about an ingredient or a sourcing practice? You can call or email us and get a real answer from the people who actually bake the treats. That level of personal accountability is rare these days, and we take pride in it. In short, we don’t just want to sell you dog treats – we want to earn a place as a trusted partner in your dog’s healthy lifestyle.

  6. Values-Driven Sourcing: Lastly, we make treats differently by considering where our ingredients come from. Whenever possible, we source from local or USA suppliers who meet high quality standards. Our whole philosophy revolves around community and sustainability. Using Michigan blueberries, for example, not only gives us top-notch fruit but also supports local farmers.

Our honey (in recipes that use it) comes from trusted beekeepers. The whole wheat flour is milled from American wheat. We know our supply chain, and we opt for responsibly sourced, non-GMO ingredients. We also never source any edible ingredient from China, which is an assurance many pet parents seek due to past safety scares.

These choices might make our treats a bit more premium, but they’re choices we feel good about – and we hope you do too, knowing that your dog’s treats are aligned with your values of quality and safety.

When you put all these differences together, the result is clear: MI Biscuit Co. treats aren’t just another dog treat. They are an extension of how much we love dogs and want the best for them. By focusing on healthy, transparent ingredients and superior cooking methods, we deliver treats that you can feel great about giving, and that dogs absolutely adore eating.

We’re often asked, “Can a dog treat really be that much better?” Our answer is: try them and see the difference – in the ingredient list, in the smell, and most importantly in your dog’s reaction. We’re confident you’ll notice the MI Biscuit Co. difference, and your pup will thank you with tail wags and maybe a few extra kisses!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the quality of ingredients in dog treats matter?

Just like with human snacks, the quality of ingredients in dog treats matters for both short-term health and long-term wellness. Low-quality ingredients (excess sugars, artificial chemicals, cheap fillers) can cause digestive upset, contribute to weight gain, or lead to cumulative health issues over time. For example, artificial preservatives like BHA/BHT may pose cancer risks with regular consumption, and too many sugary or fatty treats can eventually lead to obesity or pancreatitis. On the flip side, high-quality ingredients provide beneficial nutrients – e.g. real meat for protein, fruits for vitamins. Think of treats as an extension of your dog’s diet: a treat made of wholesome ingredients is essentially giving them extra nutrition, whereas a treat full of empty fillers is like giving your dog junk food. Occasional “junk” treats won’t kill a dog, of course – but we believe in stacking the odds in favor of your dog’s health. Every bite is an opportunity to nourish (or at least not harm). So ingredient quality matters, and it’s worth reading labels and choosing treats that prioritize healthful ingredients.

My dog loves a popular brand of treats that has some artificial ingredients – is it really that bad to keep giving them?

Indulging in a lower-quality treat once in a while is not likely to acutely harm your dog. The issues come with regular, repeated exposure and for dogs who might be sensitive. Many of the concerning ingredients (like chemical preservatives or artificial colors) have effects that are cumulative – meaning they could cause problems after building up over time. Think of it this way: eating a candy bar with artificial dyes occasionally isn’t going to ruin a human’s health, but eating it every day in place of healthier snacks might. We recommend making healthier treats the norm and saving those “junk food” treats for very rare occasions, if at all. Also, consider whether your dog can be just as happy with a healthier treat. Dogs often love the natural options even more! If your pup is crazy about a certain mainstream treat, try to find an alternative with similar flavor made from better ingredients – or use small pieces of real food (like bits of cooked chicken or carrot) as treats. Often, dogs don’t miss the junk once they have a tasty natural option. At the end of the day, it’s about moderation and making informed choices. We’re not here to shame anyone for what they’ve fed in the past – our goal is simply to empower you with information so you can make the best choice going forward.

Are “grain-free” dog treats better than treats with grains?

Not necessarily across the board – it depends on your individual dog’s needs. Grain-free dog treats replace grains with other carbohydrates (like peas, chickpeas, or potatoes). They became popular as people worried about grain allergies or sensitivities in dogs. If your dog has a confirmed grain allergy or you prefer to avoid grains, a grain-free treat is a great option. We offer a grain-free treat (our Apple Cinnamon biscuits use chickpea flour instead of wheat) to cater to these needs. However, for most dogs whole grains are not harmful – in fact, whole grains can provide beneficial nutrients. The key is the quality of the grain. A treat with wholesome oat flour or whole wheat can be perfectly healthy for a dog. On the other hand, a treat might be grain-free but loaded with sugar and artificial additives, which wouldn’t be healthy at all! The recent concern about grain-free diets and heart disease (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs primarily involved grain-free kibble diets with high levels of legumes, not the occasional grain-free treat. Our advice: if your dog tolerates grains well, you don’t need to avoid them in a treat – just make sure it’s whole grain and part of a balanced overall diet. If your dog does have grain issues or you prefer grain-free, choose grain-free treats that are made with other nutritious ingredients (like our chickpea flour, which is high in protein and fiber). In short, “grain-free” doesn’t automatically mean healthier – it’s one factor among many. We provide both kinds of treats to suit different dogs.

How do you keep MI Biscuit Co. treats fresh without artificial preservatives?

Great question! We use a combination of natural preservation methods: - First, our biscuits are oven-baked until crunchy and have very low moisture content. Moisture is what typically causes mold or bacterial spoilage. A dry cookie-type treat can stay fresh for a long time naturally (similar to how a box of crackers has a long shelf life if kept dry). - Second, we sometimes use natural preservatives like mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E) and rosemary extract, which safely slow oxidation of fats. For example, the small amount of fat in a treat (from meat or peanut butter) is protected by vitamin E – a natural antioxidant – so it doesn’t go rancid quickly. - Third, proper packaging and storage: We package our treats in airtight, resealable pouches. We recommend once you open them, keep them sealed and in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. This keeps them crunchy and fresh. We don’t add any weird chemicals to extend shelf life for years; instead we simply suggest you use the treats by the “best by” date on the package (which is typically several months from purchase). Our treats have no trouble staying fresh during that normal timeframe. - Lastly, because we produce in small batches, you’re usually getting treats that were baked recently, not something that sat in a warehouse for a year. Freshness is practically baked in!

So, in summary, drying, natural antioxidants, and good packaging practices do the trick. Your pup gets a fresh treat without any sorbates, benzoates, or other artificial preservatives.

My dog has allergies/sensitivities. Are MI Biscuit Co. treats suitable for dogs with food allergies?

We formulate our treats to minimize common allergens, but it really depends on what your dog is allergic to. Here’s what we don’t use that might help: we have no corn, no soy, no artificial additives (which some dogs can react to), and no dairy in most recipes (except a bit of cheese in one treat flavor). However, we do use wheat in several of our treats, and we use proteins like chicken, which are common allergens for some dogs. If your dog is allergic to wheat, we’ve got you covered with our grain-free recipe (Apple Cinnamon – no wheat or corn, made with chickpea flour). If your dog is allergic to chicken, we have flavors that contain no chicken (like our Salmon biscuits or Bacon & Blueberry biscuits). We clearly label all our ingredients, so you can check each flavor for any component that might concern you. Many customers with allergic dogs tell us their pups do great on our treats, likely because of the short, natural ingredient list. If your dog has a very specific allergy (say, to peanuts or flaxseed or something specific we use), and you’re not sure which treats are safe, you can always reach out to us for guidance. We can often point you to the flavor that has a different composition. Always introduce any new treat in small quantities to ensure your dog tolerates it well. But overall, our philosophy of limited, high-quality ingredients tends to agree with sensitive dogs more than the highly processed treats do.

Where are MI Biscuit Co. treats made?

All of our treats are proudly made in the USA – right here in Michigan. We prepare and bake our products in a licensed commercial kitchen facility that meets human food standards (as we discussed in the human-grade section). Being based in Michigan, we also love using local ingredients whenever possible, both to support local agriculture and because, quite frankly, Michigan produces some amazing produce! Our Michigan-grown blueberries, for example, aren’t just a marketing gimmick – they’re genuinely top quality and we love incorporating them into our Blueberry & Bacon biscuits. By making everything locally, we maintain strict control over quality and safety. There’s no outsourcing of production to unknown factories. We source our ingredients primarily from U.S. suppliers. In short, from ingredient sourcing to mixing dough to baking and packaging, every step happens under our watchful eye on our home turf. This way we ensure that when you open a bag of MI Biscuit Co. treats, you’re getting the very best of what we stand for: local quality, crafted with love.

Can I taste these treats myself? (They smell good!)

We get a kick out of this question, and the answer is yes – you can! Because our treats are human-grade and made with real food ingredients, they are technically safe for humans to eat. Don’t expect a sugary cookie (we don’t use much sugar or salt), but many pet parents have indeed nibbled on a MI Biscuit Co. treat out of curiosity. The typical feedback: “Hey, this isn’t bad – kind of like a very bland health cracker!” We designed them for doggy taste buds, which prefer meaty and peanut-buttery flavors and don’t need salt, so your pup will find them far more delicious than you will. But the fact that you could eat them speaks to our quality. It’s actually a fun little trust test: if you’re willing to put it in your own mouth, you know it’s something you truly trust to give your dog. So go ahead, give it a try if you want – we won’t judge! (And your dog will be thrilled to share, I’m sure.)

What are the best training treats for puppies?

You can start feeding your puppy small treats when they hit 8 weeks old. The best puppy training treats can be broken into small pieces, and are made from just a few healthy ingredients. Michigan Biscuit Company even makes treats that are single ingredient, making it easy to find a tasty solution for your puppy.

We hope this comprehensive guide has demystified dog treat ingredients and labels for you. At the end of the day, it’s all about keeping our beloved pets healthy and happy. By understanding what goes into their treats, you’re empowered to make the best choices.
